This year the time-honoured $125, 000 Group 3 Strickland Stakes (1800m) will take place on Saturday April 3 in the lead-up to the Perth Autumn Racing Carnival at WA’s premier metropolitan racecourse in Ascot.
The Strickland Stakes always draws a quality field of mainly local gallopers and is one of the feature racing events of the month in WA.
In recent times the Hyperion Stakes has been an excellent indicator for the Strickland Stakes
In recent times, the $150, 000 Group 3 Hyperion Stakes (1400m) at the same track two weeks prior has been an excellent indicator for the Strickland Stakes.
Last year the winner and runner-up of the Hyperion Stakes backed up their impressive runs by finishing in the money for the 2009 Strickland Stakes next start. Marasco was runner up in the Hyperion Stakes to Tarzi, but reversed the cards in the Strickland, Marsco claiming victory less than a length ahead of Tarzi.
This year the 2010 Hyperion Stakes will run on Saturday March 20 and punters should keep a close eye on the well performing weight-for-age runners in the Hyperion as an indication for which horses will back up in the Strickland Stakes.
The Strickland Stakes is the biggest race of the April 3 meeting at Ascot and the only Group status event of the day, but there is a great line-up of Listed races due to fill the card. The $75, 000 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m), $100, 000 Miss Andretti Stakes (1200m), $75, 000 Natasha Stakes (2200m) and the $75, 000 Perth Stakes (1100m) are all Black Type Listed races set to run at the meeting.
Nominations for the 2010 Strickland Stakes will close on Monday 29 March and the final field will be announced later that week and published here.
