Other weight-for-age events runners in the Strickland Stakes may have previously contested include the Group 3 AJ Scahill Stakes (1400m) back in December, the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) the previous November or the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) held in late October – all at the same course.

Strickland Stakes History

The Strickland Stakes was first run back in 1901 and is one of the oldest WA races. Limber won the inaugural race when it was known as the December Stakes and only had Principal race status.

But don’t forget about the famous group 1 race; the 2014 Melbourne Cup is just around the corner!

The event name was changed to its current title of the Strickland Stakes in 1923 and the event’s status was elevated to a Group 3 race in 1979.

Strickland Stakes Betting

A large number of punters tend to take part in Strickland Stakes betting. Because of it’s Group 3 status and the fact that it is the headline event on the day, Strickland Stakes betting tends to get quite large. Usually, the Strickland Stakes betting pool will attract tens of thousands of dollars. As a weight for age event, there is often a quandary for punters when it comes to Strickland Stakes betting: Is it better to take the older, more experienced horses even though they carry more weight? Or is it safer to go with the younger horses who may have around 5kg less on their back? Either way, Strickland Stakes betting can get quite exciting, particularly towards the end of the thrilling 2000m event.
